Sure, if you want to stretch things, you could say the zombies represent humanity's apocalyptic obsession or climate change or something like that. One such zombie story is The Walking Dead. But zombies lend themselves to political readings so well that it's rare to find a zombie story that doesn't easily do so. Zombie stories are also about flesh-eating monsters, after all. It's possible, of course, to watch these movies without once thinking about the greater purpose of the zombies. Director George Romero, for instance, famously used zombies to play around with the idea of faceless, conformist consumerism in Dawn of the Dead, while the 28 Days Later movies draw comparisons between zombies and military occupants. There are all sorts of angles to pursue with that sort of monster, but most of them involve political and social commentary. Ghost stories are about regret.īut zombie stories are about a faceless horde that threatens to consume the protagonists and make them just like them. Werewolf stories are about the darkest corners of the self (and, okay, sometimes sex). But he just wanted to take a little swim, so then he and Nick wade around a little.Zombie stories are usually - though not always - political. Without a though, Nick goes in after him. Though, the air is heavy with tension in certain places. Later, they all sit to a fancily prepared meal, as if nothing ever happened. Hoping they’ll go further as friends and allies because there’s something kindred about them, beneath the exterior. I enjoyed them in the latter part of the first season. The relationship between Strand and Nick is interesting, too. Only Strand is not happy with everyone else doing whatever it is they want on his “ goddamn boat“, and I can’t say I blame him. She gives up a bit of information trying to help coordinate their locations. The voice on the radio asks Alicia for help. This is quite clearly a rift they won’t soon get over. An emotional scene, as Travis eulogizes his ex-wife, and Chris says goodbye to his mother. About his intentions, his “ motives” possibly.Įveryone on board attends a brief, semi-funeral for Liza. They’re grateful, at least Madison is, but Daniel has suspicions. Everybody is watching him closely, particularly Madison and definitely Daniel. On the radio, Alicia tells the guy she’s talking to a little too much about Strand’s yacht. Travis asks Daniel about it later, and the older of the two reminds him that what he did for his ex-wife was the right thing: “ What I wouldn‘ t give to trade my failure for your mercy,” Daniel tells him. Zombie virus or no zombie virus tough to get over for everyone involved. After all, he did have to shoot his ex-wife. Hopefully he’s not the type to be jealous. And Travis sees them, bonding or whatever it is they’re doing. They’ve both lost someone close to them: “ Neither of us got to say goodbye,” says Chris. In lieu of bonding with his father, Chris finds himself fishing with Daniel. For the time being, she chats over a radio with someone playing tunes over a station, soundtrack to the collapse. So to be going through a formative period of life then have this happen? Can’t be easy. And there’s Alicia, she’s a young person which is already tough, then add on top of that the effective end of the world. Right now there’s Travis dealing with his son, whose feelings about his mother are obviously tumultuous. The zombie apocalypse has begun, but the human drama is still always there. Sort of like a moment we saw in The Walking Dead when Shane and Lori saw Atlanta getting bombed.
